If there is any credence in the old (albeit slightly modified) saying “you are what you drink” than I’m going to assume I’m not the only toasted coconut walking around Vancouver these days, thanks to the good folks at Dead Frog Brewery.
Their latest creation, a deliciously refreshing little concoction called “Toasted Coconut Wit” was released in perfect (dare I say harmonious) timing with perhaps the best and warmest weekend of our current lackluster summer.
I picked up a bottle on Saturday after work and decided I would give this alluring brew the honour of ‘first beer of the weekend’ and let me tell you, it did not disappoint.
Ok, so that’s not entirely true, I went into this thing with next to no intel on the product (save the name itself) and was thinking/hoping/wishing/dreaming that it would be similar to a product I had in Maui in ’09 from the Maui Brewing Company called CoCoNut Porter. Obviously I wasn’t expecting a Wit to have structural similarities to a Porter but I was really hoping for a good heavy dose of coconut to present itself. Such is not the case in this particular brew, but that only served to disappoint my expectation and not my palate.
This beer is more along the lines of a session style ale, with great effervescence, light cloudy colour, a lightly foamy head and a refreshing balance of flavours. The coconut serves more as a complimentary flavour than the main attraction and the beer maintains the refreshing qualities that lighter less spicy Wit’s can offer us.
If you want to be what you drink and aspire to become a giant human-coconut this may not be the elixir you’re looking for, but if you want a tasty and refreshing brew to accompany a nice sunny day and lawn chair of your choosing, then why not drop by BottleJockey and grab one (or more) for yourself.
